Dr. Chloe Howells is a PDRA in Prof. Eugen Stulz research group at the University of Southampton, UK and is part of the management of the consortium.
Biography
Chloe Howells graduated from the University of Hull (UK) in 2016 with an MChem in Chemistry with Molecular Medicine. She then carried out a PhD under the guidance of Dr. Nick Fletcher at Lancaster University (UK). Her thesis was titled “Investigating Benzimidazole-Based Fluorophores for Their Biological Activities”, studying novel Ru(II) polypyridyl complexes and their interactions with DNA and biologically important anions.
In 2022, Chloe moved to Cambridge (UK) where she worked as a scientist for Evonetix Ltd, synthesising novel phosphoramidites for thermally controlled DNA synthesis on chip. In 2023, she joined the Stulz group as a PDRA.
Host Laboratory
The research activities in the group of Prof. Stulz are focused on the synthesis of DNA, their modification, and subsequent study of the effects on biological systems, as well as applications in bio-nanotechnology (energy). The group has full access to state-of-the-art laboratories for synthesis and handling of DNA including chemical modification, purification and analysis (HPLC, UV-vis, fluorescence, CD spectroscopy, MS); biological studies (cell viability using flow cytometry, imaging using confocal microscopy, cell transfection etc) are performed with our collaborators at either the Southampton General Hospital (School of Medicine, Cancer Centre), in the School of Biological Sciences or with the partners in the network.
